Esthetic crown lengthening is used to correct what's commonly referred to as a "gummy smile."

Some people have teeth that look too short due to the relationship between their teeth and the gums. These patients are often referred to as having a “gummy smile”. On closer observation it appears the gum line is creeping down over the teeth, making them appear short and undeveloped. Actually the tooth is of a proper length but hidden by the gums.

To correct a gummy smile, it is necessary to remove excess gum tissue, reshape the outline of the gums, and expose the hidden natural tooth length. The treatment provides a more “full” and attractive smile.
