When decay or fractures of the tooth occur below the gum line, it may be necessary to remove a small amount of bone and gum tissue. Your dentist may ask for this procedure to be performed before he or she makes a new crown for your tooth.
What is crown lengthening surgery?
Crown lengthening at our Dallas office involves adjusting the levels of the gum tissue and bone around the tooth in question. Exposure of the tooth allows the dentist to make a proper fitting restoration. It also provides enough tooth structure so that a new restoration will not come loose in the future. Crown lengthening insures you can brush and floss the edge of the crown to prevent decay and gum disease. The procedure takes approximately one hour . When the procedure is completed, sutures are placed to help secure the new gum-to-tooth relationship. You will need to be seen in one or two weeks to evaluate your healing.
